Our Mission

Founded in 2003,
Les Femmes de Substance (LFDS) is a pre-professional organization for women of color on Cornell University's campus in Ithaca, New York.

The purpose of Les Femmes de Substance is to foster community and leadership within the Black female population on Cornell University's campus. Through educational experiences and professional programming, Les Femmes de Substance strives to create women of substance, who will make every effort to give back to and build up their surrounding communities.

Our mission reiterates our founding goals as an organization:

  • Les Femmes de Substance pledges to assist Black women at Cornell pursue leadership roles and develop their professional ambitions.

  • Les Femmes de Substance pledges to reach out to freshman and aid them with their transition into the Cornell community. 

  • Les Femmes de Substance pledges to host programs that pinpoint issues that affect women of color, within the Cornell community and beyond. 

  • Les Femmes pledges to take a critical look at the disunity on our campus and take action toward unity in the form of an annual retreat. 

  • Les Femmes pledges to give Black women on campus what they need to be women of substance and an asset to the world.

  • Les Femmes pledges to uphold the grace and dignity of all women by representing ourselves as true Women of Substance.
